Best Ways To Clean and Disinfect Your Phone

With the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, entire nations are practicing social distancing and self-quarantining. At present, the best protection against the virus is frequent hand-washing, especially after coming into contact with any surface that might harbor the virus. It’s estimated COVID-19 can exist on some surfaces, particularly glass, and metals, for up to three days. This leads to an important question: how to clean your phone from virus infections?

The presence of bacteria on a phone screen has long been established: with constant touching, it would be more surprising if there weren’t bacteria on your screen. The novel coronavirus is a new threat, however, and one that can spread before an infected person shows symptoms.

We advise you to take a few simple precautions to prevent viral particles or bacteria on your phone screen. Avoid placing your phone on surfaces that might be infected: the risk of viral particles being transmitted from one surface to another is low, but not impossible.

During the viral outbreak, limit how many people touch your phone and avoid using it within six feet of people who are coughing. Rather than bringing your phone to your face to talk, text or use speakerphone options.

How to Clean Your Phone from Virus Infections

Previously, the best-recommended way to clean a smartphone was to wipe it down using a soft, lint-free cloth, using screen wipes to remove any built-up grime. Disinfecting sprays and wipes were not recommended, out of fears they could damage the touch screen coating.

Now that the novel coronavirus is a part of life, phone manufacturers have changed their cleaning guidelines. Apple now recommends using a Clorox wipe or a wipe with 70% isopropyl alcohol. Use the wipes gently, rather than scrubbing, and don’t submerge your phone in any liquid cleaner. Apple also points out bleach should not be used, as it can seriously damage the phone, and to avoid getting any disinfecting cleaners into phone ports.
