iPhone XS Setup Guide

After reading our iPhone buying guide, you decided to opt for the high-end, cutting-edge iPhone XS or iPhone XS Max. Congrats! Your revolutionary but generically-named smartphone was quite an investment, and to get the most out of your device take some time and learn how to set up the iPhone XS before you power on your device.

Patience is a virtue and can save you a ton of battery life, confusion, and headache by familiarizing yourself with this guide first. Here’s the GoWireless iPhone XS set up guide for Apple smartphone veterans and newbies alike.

1. Back Up Your Old Phone

Backing up your previous smartphone right before you power up the iPhone XS is the only way to retain all of your content, settings, messages, and more. The process varies depending on whether or not you back up to iCloud, and if you are upgrading from a previous iPhone or jumping ship from Android. Here’s how to back up your old phone:

From iCloud — if you have iCloud backups enabled the final backup is straightforward. From the Home screen tap Settings → your Apple ID → iCloud → iCloud Backup and then select Back up now. Once you’ve logged in to your new iPhone XS, you can restore from this backup via iCloud.

From iTunes — Connect your old phone to your computer and launch iTunes. Click the phone icon that appears and under Backups click This Computer and then select Back up now. This way you can manually restore from this backup on your computer.

From an Android phone — No “backup” is needed when switching from Android. To transfer your data from an Android device, Apple has conveniently created the Move to iOS app for Android smartphones. Install this app from the Google Play Store before you want to transfer your data. After you power on your iPhone XS, begin the setup process. When you reach Apps & Data select Move Data from Android. Keep in mind that your music library and your apps will not transfer, as they are not compatible.

2. Use Automatic Setup

This process will save you a lot of hassle after backing up your data power on your new iPhone XS. When you arrive at the Automatic Setup or Quick Start screen, you can place your old device next to your new one to set up your iPhone XS. This streamlined feature bypasses the need to reenter all of your passwords and Apple ID information. Piece of cake!

Note: this workaround requires your old device to run iOS 11.1 or later, so update your software on your previous iPhone if necessary.

3. Or — Set Up Your iPhone XS Manually

If you prefer to start from scratch or have no device to restore from, that’s okay! Setting up your iPhone XS manually only takes a few minutes of your time.

You’ll complete these steps no matter how you decide to set up your iPhone XS:

First, select your language.

Select your country or region.

Connect to your wi-fi network or select Cellular to use LTE data. You can always set this up later.

This is where you have the option to complete Automatic Setup. For manual setup continue plowing forward.

Read the Data & Privacy Information and click continue.

Decide whether you want to Enable Location Services to enhance your experience in certain apps (which is essentially necessary for apps like Google Apps and Lyft). You can also Skip Location Services and venture into Settings later to enable location services for select apps like Maps.

Set up Face ID. This new security feature may be unfamiliar to you if you’re upgrading, but it’s easier and faster than Touch ID. Follow the onscreen instructions to make sure your phone will recognize your face. (Just prepare for a learning curve).

Set up a Passcode. Tap Passcode Options to select between a traditional six-digit passcode, four-digit passcode, or a custom passcode.

At this point, you’ll select Set Up as New iPhone if this is your first Apple device, or if you want a clean slate.

Enter your Apple ID and password or create a new one.

Read the terms and conditions and click agree. You’ll need to select Agree once more on the following page.

Set up Apple Pay or skip this step.

Set up iCloud Keychain.

Set up Siri and say “hey, Siri” to ensure it recognizes your voice.

Determine if you want to Send Diagnostics Information to Apple or not. There’s no real risk, but if you’re going to opt out select Don’t Send.

Select your Display Zoom, either Standard or Zoomed to enhance visibility.

You’re done! Tap Get Started and disappear into all of the possibilities of your new iPhone XS. Learn our best iPhone XS tips and tricks to get the most out of your device.

4. Learn the New Gestures

The iPhone X series, including the XS and XS Max, does away with the Home button completely. However, the functionality still exists in the form of new screen gestures. Once your phone is ready to go, take a few minutes to practice these iPhone XS gestures:

Navigate to the Home screen: Swipe up quickly from the bottom of the screen to land at the Home screen. Not too hard!

Take a screenshot: Press the volume up button and the side button simultaneously to take a screenshot.

Navigate to a different app: If you have multiple apps open you can navigate between them by swiping left or right along the bottom edge of your iPhone XS. Simply flicking your finger from the bottom corner, moving up and toward the center, as you do so, will also switch apps.

App switcher: Instead of pressing the home button twice, swipe up from the bottom edge of your iPhone XS and hold your finger on the display without letting go. Your app cards will appear, and you can then swipe through apps to quickly select one.

Close an app: From the app switcher view swipe up on any app you want to close if using iOS 12. Apple simplified this motion when designing iOS 12, so say goodbye to the time-wasting press-and-hold gesture featured on the iPhone X.
